In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

IIT Madras B.Tech admissions are offered in 9 specializations based on the marks secured in JEE Advanced followed by JoSSA counseling. Applicant should have completed 10+2 from a recognized institute with at least 60% marks secured in the qualifying examination. The seat allotment is based on the college cutoff and the candidate's preference of courses and colleges. The registration and choice filling of JoSAA generally begins from the third week of June in online mode.

IIT Madras M.Tech Eligibility Criteria
- The candidate should have successfully completed a minimum of 2 semesters in the M.Tech. Program.
- The candidate should have a minimum CGPA of 8.0 in the prescribed courses.
- Candidates in the final year of the qualifying degree are also eligible to apply.

IIT Madras M.Tech Selection Criteria
Admission to the M.Tech program will be granted on the basis of a valid score in the GATE examination.
There are also other categories under which admissions will be granted i.e.
- IIT graduates who having a CGPA of 8.0 (on a scale of 10) and above can apply without GATE Score.
- Candidates sponsored by various organizations recognized by DST as Research and Development units, candidates sponsored by NIOT or from educational institutions approved by AICTE/ UGC/ Government or from Government/ Public Sector Undertakings
- Under Quality Improvement Program, direct admission will be granted on the basis of Tests and interviews.
- UOP candidates of various organizations/industries as per the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Institute
- Defense-sponsored candidates.
All GATE qualified candidates should register first in the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) before filling online application on the IIT Madras website.
IIT Madras kick-started its 2020-21 placement drive. The first phase of the campus placements was scheduled to commence on December 1, 2020. According to reports, the companies which have offered the highest number of pre-placement offers include Microsoft (12), Goldman Sachs (9), Qualcomm (10), American Express (9), and Texas Instruments (12).
By Day-6 of the Placement Drive, ICICI Bank made 27 offers, Larsen and Toubro made 22 offers, Microsoft made 19 offers, while Intel and Flipkart made 17 offers each at IIT Madras.
Approximately 22 companies offered a total of 123 job roles on the first day (December 1, 2020). The placements at IIT Madras commenced at 7 am and concluded at 2 pm. It witnessed the participation of 22 companies covering 43 job profiles. The institute conducted the second and final slot of the day between 4 pm and 11 pm. 24 companies with 48 profiles were scheduled to participate.
A total of 1,443 students have registered for placements across different streams of study. As many as 256 companies will be recruiting for 472 profiles. A total of 71 start-ups have registered for recruitment in the ongoing academic year 2020-21.

During the 2019-2020 placement drive, over 229 recruiters represented more than 10 different sectors of the industry. The institute achieved a 64% placement record as 908 offers were made to the students.
The highest CTC stood at INR. 88.82 LPA which was offered to the students of M.Tech. program, the average CTC stood at INR. 14.79 LPA.
Over 170 PPOs were offered to the students during the 2020 placement drive.

IIT Madras is one of the best residential institutes which provides accommodation to its students in the hostels inside the campus. The institute has a total of 19 hostels which are named after the rivers of India. 4 hostels among 19 are allotted to girls only while the other 15 hostels are for boys only. However, the first-year undergraduate students are accommodated in the double-occupancy rooms, and the other students of the 2nd, 3rd, or final year are allotted the hostel rooms on the basis of availability of rooms in single/ double/ triple occupancies. Also, the students enrolled in the Postgraduate programs at IIT Madras are eligible to get the single occupancy rooms in the hostels of the institute.
IIT Madras Hostel Facilities:
- The hostels of IIT Madras are enabled with internet and Local Area Network (LAN) along with a computer room in the hostels.
- Each hostel of IIT Madras has washing machines, fully equipped sports facilities, music rooms, tech rooms, and television rooms.
- The IIT Madras hostels have a common room for meetings and other recreational activities.
- The students at the IIT Madras hostel celebrate festivals such as Holi, Pongal, Onam, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve.
- Also, the hostel night is organized annually by each hostel, where the entire hostel celebrates with food and music and the occasion also commemorates the graduating seniors of that hostel.
Apart from the above-mentioned facilities, the institute also operates minibusses and autos from the main gate connecting to other parts of the campus such as academic blocks and hostels. Also, IIT Madras has a Hostel Administration and Management which looks into hostel-related issues.
