The Institute has an illustrious history and a glorious past. The Thomason College, the oldest engineering college in India, owes its birth to the waters of Mother Ganges.
The establishment of an Engineering college at Roorkee was suggested to the Honourable James Thomason, Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Provinces, about 1846, by Colonel Cautley of the Royal Artillery, who had been Superinten¬dent-General of Canals since 1836 and was busily engaged in the scheme, first contemplated by Colonel Colvin of the Bengal Engineers, for the employment of the waters of the Ganges for irrigation. While there is no doubt that the immediate require¬ments of the Ganges Canal in engineer officers and subor¬dinates were chiefly responsible for the foundation of the Thomason College, it is probable that broader issues also influenced the minds of Mr. Thomason and his advisers and that an important point was the necessity for some systematic training for Civil Engineers in India, or at least in Northern India. The Western Jumna Canals were commenced in 1817 and the Eastern Jumna Canal in 1822.

IIT Roorkee B.Tech & B.Arch Admission 2021: How to Apply?
Firstly the 10+2 candidates having valid JEE Advanced score need to register for JoSSA through which the counselling and further seat allocation process is conducted.
First a registration form is to be filled along with choice filling. It is important to lock all the preferred choices. JoSSA Counselling includes various rounds and in every round the document verification and acceptance/withdrawal of seats is done. Once a candidate is provided a seat in any round, a provisional allotment letter is to be downloaded and pay the seat acceptance fee. Candidates can choose to float/freeze/slide options for the allotted seat.

For admission to IIT Roorkee, the following documents would be required:
- 2 passport sized photographs uploaded during JEE Advanced registration.

IIT Roorkee M.Tech/ M.Arch/ M.U.R.P. Eligibility:
- M.Tech: Minimum 60% marks are required in Bachelor's degree or 6 CGPA on a 10 point scale. For SC/ST/PD category candidates 55% marks or 5.50 CGPA is required.
- M.Arch: B.Arch or its equivalent degree from a recognized university.
- M.U.R.P: B.Arch (or its equivalent) or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engg./B.Planning from a recognized University
- The above-mentioned eligibility conditions are applicable to all regular, full-time sponsored and part-time sponsored candidates.
- Final year students who will be completing all the requirements of their qualifying examination including back paper (s) / supplementary(ies) before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for IIT Roorkee admission 2021.

IIT Roorkee M.Tech/ M.Arch/ M.U.R.P. Admission: How to Apply?
Firstly the eligible candidates having valid GATE scores need to apply on the admission portal of the IIT Roorkee website. Later the candidates need to register on the official website of COAP to participate in the counseling process. There are 3 stages in the GATE COAP- Registration, Online seat allotment, and admission acceptance.
After the registration, based upon the preferred choice of course and institute and GATE score, COAP counseling rounds are conducted. In each round candidate has the option to either Accept and Freeze, Retain and Wait, Reject and Wait.
Once the choice is frozen, candidates have to confirm their seats by paying the confirmation fee and get the provisional allotment letter.
NOTE: While filling the application form, candidates are allowed to apply a maximum for 4 departments and may give prioritized preference for a maximum of 13 academic programs.

IIT Roorkee MBA programme is a 2 year full time course divided into 8 terms. The institute is ranked at 35 by Business Today for its MBA program and at 48 by the Economics Times. The IIT Roorkee CAT cutoff goes around 94 percentile.

IIT Roorkee bagged 272 placement offers on the first day of its 2020-21 recruitment drive. A total of 265 companies have booked a slot for IIT Roorkee campus placements this December, which includes some of the major tech companies of India as well as abroad.
Over 60% of the total students have already been placed and a 10% hike has been observed in the average pay package at IIT Roorkee.
